Created by Discover the Universe in 2022 and now offered in collaboration with the Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets in Montreal, Beyond the Stars is creating a meaningful impact on local education by bringing hands-on astronomy experiences to remote and Indigenous communities across Canada. Led by Project Manager Heidi White, the program fosters curiosity and scientific discovery while honouring the distinct knowledge and cultural perspectives of each community.
As a central core of the program is an opportunity for students to dabble in astrophotography by taking their own pictures of the sky using the remote telescopes of the Las Cumbres Observatory. This allows students to learn about the sky, how astronomy images are taken, and gain firsthand experience in data collection and image processing.

A hallmark of Beyond the Stars is its adaptability, ensuring each program is co-designed with the people it serves. Whether through remote or in-person learning formats, the program is shaped by local priorities, community input, and cultural traditions. Activities range from sky storytelling and data-driven astronomical imaging to creative interpretations of celestial objects. The program’s flexibility allows it to align with each community's resources, interests, and learning styles.
The program’s place-conscious approach is evident in its outreach across Canada:
In Nunavut, students engaged in virtual workshops customized to their remote environment and local perspectives on the sky.
In Ontario, young adults at Riverstone campus connected astronomy with workforce skills through tailored, hands-on activities.
In Québec, partnerships with Indigenous and community-based schools introduced students to a rich blend of cultural and scientific exploration.
Rooted in the principle of Two-Eyed Seeing (Etuaptmumk)—which integrates Indigenous knowledge with Western science—Beyond the Stars fosters learning that is both personal and profound. Through every session, participants explore the cosmos while deepening their connection to culture, creativity, and community.
